The department of Microbiology was primarily founded at around 1980 including Parasitology, Mycology, Immunology and Virology as well as Bacteriology. Currently the department includes the Medical Bacteriology and Virology subgroups.
The Medical Microbiology department provides training for undergraduate and postgraduate medical students with up to date lectures in accordance with the lesson plans set by the Ministry of Health and Medical Education as well as own research activities. Postgraduate programmes accepting students for MSc were started in 1992 and PhD programmes in the field of Microbiology in 2007.
Besides teaching, the group is involved in research projects in medical bacteriology, molecular biology and epidemiology of bacterial and viral infections. The group has good connections and cooperative activities with the established research centres in the university especially the Medical Mycology and the Bacteriology Research Centre and the Research Centre of Tropical and Infectious Diseases. Faculty members take regular sabbatical leaves in order to be up to date and to collaborate in other scientific research projects.
